About Us

Welcome to our White Cross West Derby practice where our pet-crazy team of experts are ready and waiting to help take care of your dogs, cats, rabbits and other small pets.

Learn more about your local White Cross Vets...

White Cross Vets is a friendly practice with more than 80 years’ experience of caring for pets.

Our West Derby practice, which you’ll find on Muirhead Avenue, is open six days a week. We’re here from 8.30am to 7pm on Monday to Friday or 8.30am to 5pm on Saturdays.

Every member of our friendly team at West Derby has a pet of their own – between them they have 13 dogs, eight cats, five fish and two guinea pigs that our nurse Charlotte took in after they were rescued from a nearby park where they were abandoned. Ashleen, our senior vet, enjoys looking after her family’s horse and client care co-ordinator Rebekha has two working spaniels. Poppy, another of our client care co-ordinators, enjoys pet photography and displays her pictures on a dedicated pet Instagram account.

As well as pets, the team shares a passion for keeping fit and healthy and everyone does a weekly yoga session together at the practice – led by our nurse Jane who is also a qualified yoga teacher. They also have a Fitbit competition to see who does the most steps around the practice while caring for our patients to walk off all the lovely cakes that our vet Louise bakes for us.

The West Derby team is proud to be nominated for the Petplan Veterinary Awards Practice of the Year.

Keep up to date with the team and meet some of our patients on the practice’s Facebook page.

Services

The facilities at our Liverpool vet practice include an operating theatre equipped with anaesthetic facility for surgical procedures, digital x-ray, in-house laboratory (which helps with rapid diagnosis), separate dog and cat wards, dentistry equipment and an ultrasound. This means the team can carry out a full range of treatments from blood pressure monitoring to emergency operations.

Our patients’ peace of mind is always our ultimate goal and we’re making huge progress towards becoming a cat-friendly clinic, learning handling techniques to reduce stress and redesigning our practice with cats in mind. We use a combination of pheromones, special lighting and music to make your pet’s visit as comfortable as possible.

Our highly trained team brings a combination of skills, interests and experience into the mix including veterinary nurse Jayne who has achieved a BSc in vet nursing and runs mobility clinics for older dogs – head nurse Mandy is also running senior clinics for older dogs and is our cat clinic ambassador. Vet Louise has an interest in dermatology and nurse Emma enjoys surgical nursing.

If you have any concerns about your pet, please call 0151 270 1759 to chat with one of our team.

Community work

We’re proud to take our place at the heart of the West Derby and surrounding communities and we always give something back when we get chance.

We always like to take the opportunity to get involved with educating the next generation where we can and visit local schools including Our Lady of Sorrows Primary School and St Matthews Primary School in Walton, taking our extra special team members – border terriers Molly and Peggy – with us. We always treat all school pets for free including Thomas the hamster.

We give every team member five ‘donation days’ each year so that they can spend time volunteering for a charitable cause of their choice and senior vet Ashleen chooses to use hers teaching responsible pet ownership in local school.

We support Freshfields Animal Rescue in Liverpool – who rescue more than 1,200 pets per year – with a collection box in reception and we also collect items to be donated to this excellent cause.

And, because we care for those who care, we offer a 10% discount to all employees of the NHS, emergency services and armed forces to say thank you for all that they do.

Local area

Our Liverpool practice cares for pets from far and wide including the communities of West Derby, Croxteth, Norris Green, Huyton, Bootle, Litherland, Crosby, The Wirral, Hunts Cross, Woolton, Gateacre, Halewood, Dingle, Aintree, Walton and Fazakerly.

You’ll find our practice at 200-202 Muirhead Avenue (just off Queens Drive) next door to Bargain Booze. There is free parking right outside the door. We’re located to the east of Liverpool, just two miles from the famous homes of Liverpool and Everton Football Clubs.

With 13 dogs between us, you’ll often find members of our team out walking their four legged friends. We recommend our favourite dog walking spots, Croxteth Country Park with 500 acres of woodland, pastures and ponds; the National Trust’s Formby Woods which includes some beautiful walks along the coastline; Sefton Park with a children’s playground and several cafes; and Calderstones Park, a 94-acre family park with a boating lake, miniature railway and popular cafe.

Out of hours service

Being a pet owner is a 24-hour-a-day commitment so we provide care 24 hours per day, seven days a week, 365 days a year through our trusted out-of-hours service partner.

Pet dental services: dental care for dogs, cats and rabbits

We recommend you should have your pet’s teeth examined by one of our team on a regular basis. As many conditions are progressive, early identification is important.

A full dental check is included free with our Complete Wellness Plan.

If necessary, this should be followed up with a professional dental clean. Our team will then remove the tartar above and below the gumline and polish them, just like a dentist does for our teeth.

If certain teeth are so severely affected they cannot be saved, extractions will be necessary. Pets are usually able to go home on the same day.

– Dental health checks £FREE

– Dental ultrasonic cleaning and polishing £99
This price includes: general anaesthetic, fluids and medication

– Dental with extractions (all-inclusive) £299
This price includes: blood tests, general anaesthetic, fluids, medication and unlimited digital dental X-rays

– Rabbit dental package (all-inclusive) £120
This price includes: general anaesthetic, fluids, medication, dental X-rays and post op feeding

Our all-inclusive dental packages give you peace of mind that you can provide your pet with the best dental care without being surprised by any hidden costs. Please note that all pets on the Complete Wellness Plan will receive 20% off all dental procedures.

For more information on caring for your pets, including tips on good pet dental care and how to clean your pet’s teeth, read our advice pages.

  • "Thank you Penny & Eve for your professionalism, compassion and, above all, for putting what was best for our Jack dog first, and for explaining every possible option & outcome to us & giving us time without rushing or pushing us into a decision. We lost our pet dog, which was unavoidable, but we found the most caring, considerate & medically able veterinary surgeon & nurse we could wish for. Something that was sadly lacking from another surgery we had been to."

She was initially seen and operated on by ‘Vets Now’ due to it being a Sunday evening, and was then transferred by ourselves to White Cross. We were met by Jessica who immediately reasurred us and showed such compassion & professionalism, in fact all of the staff at White Cross cared for Mollie as though she were their own. They invited us to phone at any time for an update and contacted us when they said they would. Thanks to their care Mollie has made a wonderful recovery, I can’t thank them enough and will highly recommend this practice to everyone."
