About Us

Welcome to our St Helens vet practice. Our friendly and professional team is ready to help take care of your dogs, cats, rabbits and other small pets.

Learn more about your local White Cross Vets...

Introducing White Cross Vets – a friendly practice that has been caring for pets for more than 80 years.

Our St Helens vet practice, based on Millfield Road, Eccleston, is open from 8.30am until 7pm on weekdays or from 8.30am until 12.30pm on Saturday. We’re accredited as a Cat Friendly Practice by the ISFM so you can have peace of mind knowing that your feline friend will be made to feel at home.

You’ll find that our team are all pet lovers – and have pets of their own at home. In fact, the team collectively owns 27 pets (nine cats, six dogs, six horses, four rats and two hamsters) and they’re all enrolled on to the practice’s Complete Wellness Plan. Leanne, our client care co-ordinator, is a regular attendee at the world’s greatest dog show, Crufts. One of our student nurses, Lauren, spends her free time riding horses and, as she comes from a family of farmers, you’ll find her helping out with lambing in the spring.

We’re proud of how quickly our team has expanded and the amazing relationships that have developed between our team members, and between our team and our clients. Our claim to fame is that our practice has been featured on Ferne + Rory’s Vet Tales on CBeebies. We like to stay healthy so we can keep your pets healthy and you’ll often see the team out walking – with dogs of course – or organising fun and active events to raise money for charity.

Find out what the team is up to on our Facebook page.

Services

At our St Helens vet practice you’ll find facilities include an operating theatre, digital x-ray, in-house laboratory (so we only need to wait minutes for results rather than days) and a blood pressure monitor.

Our clinic is designed to make your pet feel as safe and calm as possible which includes a dedicated cat-only waiting area and stress-relieving music. Ann-Marie is our dedicated Cat Clinic ambassador and we have been credited with a silver standard as an International Cat Care (iCatCare) Cat Friendly Clinic.

When it comes to our team, you’ll find they have a wide variety of specialisms, such as vet Ginnie who specialises in soft tissue surgery and orthopaedics and has an interest in exotic pets. Clinic director and vet Michelle has a particular interest in medicine, especially dermatology, ophthalmology and ultrasonography.

If you have any concerns about your pet, please give us a call for a chat.

Community work

We take our responsibility as a community vet very seriously and are always looking for ways to support local pets – and their owners. For example, we help our team members to make a difference to our community by giving them five ‘donation days’ each year so that they can spend time volunteering for a charitable cause of their choice.

The charities we support include our local Dog’s Trust shelter, the local branch of Cat’s Protection, Guide Dogs UK and Warrington Animal Welfare.

We’re proud to be able to say that we always treat all school pets for free. We love looking after the rabbits and guinea pigs belonging to nearby Cowley International College in St Helens, and the rabbits of Newton Pre-School.

We enjoy welcoming future vets and pet owners into the practice and our team has given local brownie groups a talk and shown them around the practice.

And, because we care for those who care, we offer a 10% discount to all employees of the NHS, emergency services and armed forces to say thank you for all that they do.

Local area

Our St Helens practice is located on the west side of St Helens, on Millfields Court, Eccleston, just off Millfields/Knowsley Road. We’re proud to look after the pets belonging to the nearby communities of Eccleston, Rainford, Billinge, Crank, St Helens, Rainhill, Whiston, Prescot, Huyton, Wigan and Haydock.

We have plenty of free parking right outside for practice for all our clients and it’s easy to find us – we’re right opposite the Eccleston Community Fire Station and next door to Sainsbury’s Local. Nearby you’ll find the Crispy Cod fish and chip shop and the Eccleston Court Care Home.

Our practice backs on to the much-loved Taylor Park, a popular area for local dog walkers and many of our clients walk their pets here before or after their appointments at White Cross Vets. There’s also some excellent children’s playground facilities and a good café. Locals know to bring any injured or sick wildlife that they find in the park to us – we treat all sick and injured wildlife for free.

Out of hours service

Caring for pets is an around-the-clock commitment. That’s why we provide care 24 hours per day, seven days a week, 365 days a year through our trusted out-of-hours service partner.

Pet dental services: dental care for dogs, cats and rabbits

We recommend you should have your pet’s teeth examined by one of our team on a regular basis. As many conditions are progressive, early identification is important.

A full dental check is included free with our Complete Wellness Plan.

If necessary, this should be followed up with a professional dental clean. Our team will then remove the tartar above and below the gumline and polish them, just like a dentist does for our teeth.

If certain teeth are so severely affected they cannot be saved, extractions will be necessary. Pets are usually able to go home on the same day.

– Dental health checks £FREE

– Dental ultrasonic cleaning and polishing £99
This price includes: general anaesthetic, fluids and medication

– Dental with extractions (all-inclusive) £299
This price includes: blood tests, general anaesthetic, fluids, medication and unlimited digital dental X-rays

– Rabbit dental package (all-inclusive) £120
This price includes: general anaesthetic, fluids, medication, dental X-rays and post op feeding

Our all-inclusive dental packages give you peace of mind that you can provide your pet with the best dental care without being surprised by any hidden costs. Please note that all pets on the Complete Wellness Plan will receive 20% off all dental procedures.

For more information on caring for your pets, including tips on good pet dental care and how to clean your pet’s teeth, read our advice pages.

Reviews

  • "The staff are so friendly in here. They always can't to you and come and ask about your pet. Brought my dog in for his annual boosters. The vet took time to get to know him and was so gentle and caring with him, and even kept my baby entertained, as she came along for the trip, too. Dog got biscuits at the end, we all left happy and cared for."

    - Clare Ashton

  • "I have delt with many vets and struggled to find one suitable for my dog riley since becoming a member of the pet plan with white cross vets i can not fault it at all, always there to help your pet and not trying to make money out of you would highly recommend this vet."

    Xx"

    - Cara Harrison

  • "I would like to Thank all the staff at the surgery for the care the gave to Buster Skelland. I had to make the terrible decision on Monday to have him put to sleep after 14 lovely years with him. They were very sympathetic and made the process as painless for us as possible. Buster fell asleep in my arms peacefully.
    Would highly recommend White Cross.
    Once again Thank You x"

    - Karen Skelland

  • "Love this vets and thank you too Kelly for sorting my dog Scooby out after he had been too numerous other places to be told he had a skin conditions and just use a medicated shampoo, Kelly examined him and gave him steroids and it cleared up and it was like he had a new lease of life. Staff are fantastic and very polite and friendly. Highly recommend too anyone."

    - Claire Louise Smith

  • "Our lively and loud collie cross was looked after
    wonderfully.
He had a small lump removal and was released to us
    alert and well following this.
Due to his vocal nature I was expecting a 'come and
get him call but this didn't happen. He was cared for
perfectly till fit and well enough to come home -
albeit in 'the cone' which is causing us great
    amusement and bruises.
Cant recommend this practice highly enough."

    - Jaine Riley

  • "My first visit to the practice, and I can fault nothing. Bright, airy and clean, this impression is not just superficial. Staffed by genuine, interested and friendly staff, from walking in to leaving I and my pets were treated wonderfully.
Sadly one of my cats was so poorly we had to make the kindest decision. She was treated with respect and humility and Kelly was the kindest, gentlest vet I have ever encountered in over 25 years.
I would highly recommend taking your pets here."

    - Bethany Ruth Dingsdale

  • "Very sadly I had to agree to put a 6 month old kitten / cat to sleep this time last week. White Cross in St Helens had been there for him through his vaccinations, his chip and his snip. I was a mess but was allowed to sit with my kitten in my arms for as long as I wanted / needed to pull myself together.
My Mrs received a call later in the day to make sure I had arrived home safely. Clearly my upset state was a concern for the staff and the care and consideration to call my Mrs speaks volumes for these guys.
A lovely sympathy card with the little man's paw print inside arrived in the post a few days later and I cannot speak highly enough about the staff and the care given to pets and soppy owners like me. Thank you very much indeed."
