About Us

Welcome to White Cross Vets Derby – Alvaston, where you’ll find a pet-loving team of experts waiting to take care of your dogs, cats, rabbits and other small pets.

Learn more about your local White Cross Vets...

Our Alvaston practice, which you’ll find on London Road, is open six days a week – from Monday to Friday we’re open from 8am until 7pm and on Saturday from 8.30am to 5pm.

As well as being accredited as a Cat Friendly Practice by the ISFM, we are also accredited as a rabbit and chicken-friendly practice.

Our friendly team understands how important your pet is to you – because they’re all pet crazy too – between them they have 38 pets, and that’s not including the chickens, fish, snakes, lizards and small furry pets! Veterinary Nurse Sammii is a regular at Crufts with her two Dalmatians, Lexi and Lottie, and she’s a member of the NOEDC Dalmation Welfare Committee. And, if you’re looking for a puppy party, our Head Nurse Emily runs the best ones in the whole of Derby!

Outside of work the team likes to keep fit, especially Clinic director and vet Laura who is into long distance cycling and is always looking for her next challenge.

Take a look at the practice’s Facebook page where you can see what the team has been up to, plus some of the gorgeous visitors we have in our practice every week!

Services

Our White Cross Vets Alvaston practice is very well equipped with all the latest equipment and technology. Facilities include three operating theatres, x-ray, in-house laboratory (meaning results will be turned around in minutes rather than days), blood pressure monitor and an isolation unit where we can monitor in patients.

Our cat-friendly practice has a dedicated waiting area, consulting room and wards with ultra soft bedding for our feline friends and the team is specifically trained in how to handle cats in a way that minimises stress and makes them feel safe.

Our team has a wide range of specialisms and interests including Head nurse Emily who is our cat friendly clinic ambassador and has a keen interest in pet behaviour. Clinic director and vet Laura is interested in veterinary acupuncture and treating exotics. Nurse, Kirsty specialises in pet nutrition, pet behaviour and giving out bereavement advice, Nurse Michelle is interested in pet physio, Amanda is interested in dentistry and Nurse Sarah runs clinics on senior health.

If you have a question about your pet, speak to a member of our team on 01332 756 060.

Community work

Our pet-mad team is dedicated to giving something back to the community we serve – especially if we’re helping pets in the process. We attend the annual Alvaston Fun Day and, to help raise vital funds for Ashbourne Animal Welfare, we support the ‘Bark in the Park’ event which is held every year in nearby Darley Park.

We’re proud to be able to say that we treat all school pets and wildlife for free and we help to educate the pet owners and vets of the future whenever we can by visiting local schools and community groups to teach responsible pet care. We look after the pets at Wyndham Primary Academy and Alvaston Infant School.

We support charities that are close to our hearts, which include Amicci Dog Rescue and Yappy Ever After dog rescue.

Kirsty and Emily are working towards becoming Pets as Therapy pet assessors and three of our team’s dogs – Geoffrey, Lexi and Mike – are hoping to become Pets as Therapy dogs soon.

Local area

Our practice is located to the south east of Derby and we’re proud to look after the pets of Alvaston and the whole of the Derby area.

You’ll find us conveniently located on London Road opposite Tesco Express – we’re just on the town side of the A6/Harvey Road/London Road roundabout. Also nearby is the Alvaston branch of Dominos Pizza, a Texaco garage and Iceland Foods. There is plenty of free parking for all of our clients in the large car park behind the practice.

We’re spoilt for choice when it comes to pleasant dog walks in the area, starting with our local riverside Alvaston Park which covers 85 acres with a BMX track, science garden and cafe. Also nearby is Elvaston Castle Country Park which is 321 acres of open parkland with a nature reserve and the Grade II listed gothic revival castle. Slightly further afield is the National Trust-owned stately home Calke Abbey which has 600 acres of dog walks and a dog-friendly restaurant and cafe, or the beautiful Peak District which is just a short drive away.

Out of hours service

As a pet owner, you’re never off duty. That’s why we provide care 24 hours per day, seven days a week, 365 days a year through our trusted out-of-hours service partner.

Pet dental services: dental care for dogs, cats and rabbits

We recommend you should have your pet’s teeth examined by one of our team on a regular basis. As many conditions are progressive, early identification is important.

A full dental check is included free with our Complete Wellness Plan.

If necessary, this should be followed up with a professional dental clean. Our team will then remove the tartar above and below the gumline and polish them, just like a dentist does for our teeth.

If certain teeth are so severely affected they cannot be saved, extractions will be necessary. Pets are usually able to go home on the same day.

– Dental health checks £FREE

– Dental ultrasonic cleaning and polishing £99
This price includes: general anaesthetic, fluids and medication

– Dental with extractions (all-inclusive) £299
This price includes: blood tests, general anaesthetic, fluids, medication and unlimited digital dental X-rays

– Rabbit dental package (all-inclusive) £120
This price includes: general anaesthetic, fluids, medication, dental X-rays and post op feeding

Our all-inclusive dental packages give you peace of mind that you can provide your pet with the best dental care without being surprised by any hidden costs. Please note that all pets on the Complete Wellness Plan will receive 20% off all dental procedures.

For more information on caring for your pets, including tips on good pet dental care and how to clean your pet’s teeth, read our advice pages.

  • "Rio developed a tiny lump on his leg and as we were visiting the practice with our other dog we asked the nurse to take a look. She wasn't sure and suggested we monitor it. After 4 days Rio suddenly started to lick his leg and on looking it was clear that the lump had changed. I called Whitecross immediately and by the end of the day Rio had been seen, had a biopsy taken and we had been called to advise that he has a benign tumour and talk us through the options available. At the moment we are monitoring the situation, but I am grateful for the prompt reaction of Will, the Vet for putting our worst fears "to bed".
    Thank you"

  • "The team are beyond question in terms of integrity and knowledge. We moved to White Cross from another practice after receiving poor care and expensive tests as a result of poorly trained vets. I cannot say enough about fantastic knowledge and experience of the vets. I have never seen a locum and that's because it is a thriving practice who are proud to be operating well."
