Lexi, Lottie and Lilly

Our team of caring vets and nurses are here to offer advice from choosing the most suitable family pet, through to routine vaccinations, health checks, neutering and medical problems, as well as understanding major surgery and senior care.

All our White Cross team members have their own pets, but Alvaston practice nurse Sammii goes polka dotty about pets that are spotty! Her Dalmatian, Lexi (aka Jewel Ruby Queen), competes at Crufts every year, and Sammii also has two spotted rabbits called Lottie and Lilly (pictured).

Pet dental services: dental care for dogs, cats and rabbits

We recommend you should have your pet’s teeth examined by one of our team on a regular basis. As many conditions are progressive, early identification is important.

A full dental check is included free with our Complete Wellness Plan.

If necessary, this should be followed up with a professional dental clean. Our team will then remove the tartar above and below the gumline and polish them, just like a dentist does for our teeth.

If certain teeth are so severely affected they cannot be saved, extractions will be necessary. Pets are usually able to go home on the same day.

– Dental health checks £FREE

– Scale & polish £99

– Dental with extractions £199

For more information on caring for your pets, including tips on good pet dental care and how to clean your pet’s teeth, read our advice pages.

All prices are inclusive of VAT.

"Rio developed a tiny lump on his leg and as we were visiting the practice with our other dog we asked the nurse to take a look. She wasn't sure and suggested we monitor it. After 4 days Rio suddenly started to lick his leg and on looking it was clear that the lump had changed. I called Whitecross immediately and by the end of the day Rio had been seen, had a biopsy taken and we had been called to advise that he has a benign tumour and talk us through the options available. At the moment we are monitoring the situation, but I am grateful for the prompt reaction of Will, the Vet for putting our worst fears "to bed".
Thank you"

Veterinary acupuncture at Alvaston

Veterinary Acupuncture at Alvaston

Having been trained by the Association of British Veterinary acupuncturists, Senior Vet Laura is able to offer acupuncture for your pets.

Acupuncture is a technique originally developed in China for the treatment of a range of painful and inflammatory conditions using tiny needles inserted to specific points on the body. It is now widely used in Western medicine too and even available on the NHS (but only humans!) 20170130_165237

Laura mostly treats pets suffering from arthritic, neurological or other joint problems but essentially any inflammatory condition can be treated with minimal side effects; in some cases allowing a reduction in use or dose of more conventional medications.

We have had some very successful patients at Alvaston including Molly, a 10 year old Crossbreed who is diabetic so limited in what medication she can take.  Molly has come on leaps and bounds after starting Acupuncture with Laura. She has reduced her medication, is able to go for longer walks and her owners are delighted she is more active and comfortable.

If you think your pet may benefit from Veterinary Acupuncture please get in contact with the clinic and speak to Laura.

Exotic Pets at Alvaston

Exotic Pets at Alvaston

Did you know in the veterinary world any pet animal not a cat or a dog is called an exotic pet!

So this included more commonly kept rabbits and guinea pigs but also snakes, lizards, parrots, degus, tortoises and anything else that flaps, slithers or crawls through the door.

Senior Vet Laura has completed a Royal College Certificate including exotic pet modules and is continuing to study exotic avian pets and zoological medicine.  20150404_130919

She is experienced in seeing a range of exotic pets and can provide advice from husbandry and hibernation techniques through to dealing with all sorts of poorly pets.

She is also happy to see birds of prey and backyard chickens and has been trained by The Chicken Vet and we are an associated practice.

We are also members of the Rabbit Welfare Association and Fund and take part in Rabbit Awareness Week each year.

If you have an exotic pet, why not book in for a check up and husbandry assessment?

Most exotics pets only get examined when they are unwell but many problems can often be picked up on routine examinations before they progress.

IMG_0038The only pets we are unable to see are: Primates, venous snakes, any pet listed under the Dangerous Wild Animals Act and skunks on site!

We also treat wildlife but have limited rehabilitation facilities so may refer causalities to better equipped centers.
