Prescriptions are available from our practice. You may obtain relevant veterinary medicinal products from your veterinary surgeon OR ask for a prescription and obtain these medicines from another veterinary surgeon or a pharmacy.

Your veterinary surgeon may prescribe relevant veterinary medicinal products only following a clinical assessment of a pet under his or her care.

A prescription may not be appropriate if your pet is an in-patient or immediate treatment is necessary.

You will be informed, on request, of the price of any medicine that may be prescribed for your pet.

The general policy of White Cross Vets is to re-assess a pet requiring repeat prescriptions for/supplies of relevant veterinary medicinal products every three months, but this may vary with individual circumstances. The standard charge for a re-examination is displayed in reception.

Further information on the prices of medicines is available on request.

Unlicensed medication

Not all medications used in veterinary practice are licensed or have a UK Marketing Authorisation. This is particularly true for the more exotic pets we treat, as well as rabbits, where the costs of the licensing process are prohibitive to the pharmaceutical companies.

Unlicensed products have often been used by vets for many years e.g. diazepam, metronidazole, adrenalin and do not typically have any greater risk of side effects than a licensed product, although these do still exist. Your veterinary surgeon will choose a medication based on clinical need, having considered legislation called “the Cascade”, and when the product is not licensed will typically ask you to sign a form to confirm that this has been suitably explained.

White Cross Vets Complete Wellness Plan

Our Complete Wellness Plan includes unlimited free consultation meaning you can pop in to see one of our vets as often as you like. Many our our patients on long term medication receive all their reassessments for free as part of the plan.
